This Christmas, many of you will be spending time with family and friends. There will be gifts to open, food to eat, company to enjoy, sparkling lights, and the fun of seeing the little children’s eyes light up when they open the present they have been longing for.
But what do you do after the mountain of giftwrap is hauled out, your loved ones go home, the noise dies down, and you find yourself in the darkness of your room feeling cold, empty and alone once again? What do you do when that quiet voice deep inside keeps telling you that there has got to be more to Christmas than this?
2,000 years ago the God of the universe sent His only son Jesus to earth in the form of a little, helpless baby. There were no global celebrations or national fireworks at the time of His birth, just a small night light of hope placed high in the sky to indicate that God’s great plan of redemption was in motion. This baby was the purest light and righteousness of God. This baby was born to display the perfect Holiness of God and expose the depth of wickedness and darkness within the hearts of all men. This baby’s light would awaken the hearts of many to the vast chasm of sin that divides the children of men from their creator, and illuminate their immense need for a savior. This baby of light would one day faithfully go to the cross, take upon Himself the wrath of God that was intended to be poured out on you and I, die, and through the shedding of His blood purchased eternal life for all who would believe in Him.
Today, this baby’s holy light is still searching for those who would humble themselves, repent of their sins and rest in Him as their only hope for salvation and righteousness before God. This Christmas, when the noise dies down and the darkness closes in, may the light of Jesus Christ penetrate your heart and awaken you to the realities of God and the hope of salvation that is found in His holy child of light – Jesus.
Merry Christmas!
