I have called my wife Jolee the nickname “Angel” since we first got married in 1999 because she has been like an angel to me ever since I first met her. This Mother’s Day I wanted to do something extra special for her, so I wrote her a poem for the very first time. I am not a poet, but I do know that there is something special about poetry that touches people at the deepest level of the heart. I wrote my first poem (other than being forced to in school) in my mid 20’s, so this is my second true effort. I frankly didn’t know if the structure of my poem to Jolee was technically correct – or if it would even be considered a poem by the pros. But, none of that seemed to matter when I saw the tears of joy and appreciation flowing down my wife’s face when I read it to her. After that experience I can assure you that there will be more poems to come :)
I Love You My Sweet Angel Dear
by Mike Kretsinger for my lovely wife Jolee on 5-11-08
I love you my sweet angel dear
we praise, and seek, with hope and fear
a holy God whose very breath
created worlds and storms and death
but with a whisper also formed
our love, His gift with faith adorned.
I love you my sweet angel dear
who God has given me through the years
to love, to serve, to hold, to bless,
a bride from Christ so purely dressed
few grooms will plunge so vast, so grand,
a depth of love from God’s right hand.
I love you my sweet angel dear
through raging storm and blinding tear
and joyful days of endless bliss
your presence sweet and warmest kiss
I’ll give my life for yours, my love
through grace given me from God above.
I love you my sweet angel dear
though children grow and then comes near
the joyful day when they go on
to find a love like ours, so strong
they too can nurture like a rose
that spreads God’s fragrance as it grows.
I love you my sweet angel dear
and as I close, one truth is clear
Christ’s grace upholds, surrounds, protects
this gift of love thru which we’re blessed
to share for life eternally
and cherish till His face we see!
What does it mean to be “steadfast” ? The Bible tells us about the STEADFAST love of the Lord over and over again. Here are just a few examples…
1 Corinthians 15:58
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”
Lamentations 3:22
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.”
Psalm 25:10
“All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.”
James 1:12
“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
Colossians 1:23
“if indeed you continue in faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.”
Psalm 100:5
“For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”
2 Peter 1:5-6
For the very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.”
So as I pondered God’s word and what it means to be steadfast I began to “dig deeper” and here is what I found.
Steadfast: solid, strong, standing firm, sure, to make strong, be strengthened, established, made strong, received strength, firmness, security, to strengthen, stand firm, to be resolute, fixed, steadfastly set, stability of your faith, a solid front (in a military sense), and that upon which a thing can rest.
After gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to know our God is steadfast and keeps his children steadfast, my prayer is that when the storms come, and they will come, that I will remain steadfast by His grace and my husband and our children will remain steadfast, immovable, resting, established and secure trusting in all that God promises to be for us through Christ Jesus our King!
